THIS MEETING CONCLUDED AND DERRICK SMITH AND CHRIS BRYANT, OF WORCESTER ASSOCIATION OF CRICKET OFFICIALS (WACO) WERE INVITED TO JOIN THE MEETING TO EXPLAIN “UMPIRES PATHWAY” INITIATIVE.

UMPIRE PATHWAY

THIS INITIATIVE WAS BORN FOLLOWING A RESPONSE TO THE NATIONAL SURVEY OF TWO YEARS AGO WHICH PLACED WORCESTERSHIRE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ALL COUNTY LIST RE UMPIRE SATISFACTION.

ADD TO THIS THE FACT THAT NUMBERS PLAYING CRICKET WERE FALLING AND HENCE THE REVENUE COMING INTO THE COUNTY FROM THE CENTRAL FUNDING WAS REFLECTING THAT FALL, ALARM BELLS WERE RINGING.

SOMETHING NEEDED TO BE DONE.

THE PATHWAY IS VERY MUCH A POSITIVE INITIATIVE OF TRAINING, ASSESSMENT, OBSERVATION AS A COLLECTIVE PLACING THE CORRECT LEVEL OF UMPIRE WITH THE ASSOCIATED LEVEL OF CRICKET…ROUND PEGS IN ROUND HOLES!!

WITH THIS IN MIND STANDARDS OF CRICKET WILL BE GRADED AS WILL UMPIRES TO ACHIEVE THIS MATCH – W4 TO W1 ( W4 BEING THE ENTRY LEVEL).

UMPIRES WILL RECEIVE ACCREDITATION FOR ONE YEAR TO BE FOLLOWED BY THREE YEAR BLOCKS BASED UPON:

QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, UPDATED TRAINING, CURRENT PERFORMANCE AND ACCREDITED OBSERVATIONS.

Captains will still be asked for their marks but these will be treated as merely background data and to flag potential problems

There has been a memorandum of understanding produced and circulated to WCB.

It was agreed that this was very much work in progress with an attitude of a rolling snowball gathering more parties as the scheme modified and developed.

There was a suggestion that funding or partial funding would be available to support those in training and funding would be available to meet the costs of the official observers.
